Training Days
The key word is ‘offer’. Your subscription fee gives you access to training events, but you will never be spoon fed. You will be allocated an Observer who will contact you soon after you join to arrange an initial ride out. This will last ninety minutes and take in many of the environments you are likely to face on the Test. They will offer guidance as to how you can bring your riding skills to a level to take the Test. At the end of which you will receive a ride report detailing areas that need improvement - you will need to keep this form throughout your training and will serve as record of your progress. After the initial ride you and your Observer will arrange mutually convenient times for further training which will be tailored to your specific needs. In addition, we have a set date in the month for a group training session. This is an opportunity for an Associate’s ride to be seen with a fresh pair of eyes, as Observers are swapped around with a new Associate for a one-off training ride. These meets are held on the Saturday before the 3rd Sunday of every month and start at 2pm at Bledlow Ridge Village Hall, Chinnor Road, Bledlow Ridge, High Wycombe, Bucks, HP14 4AJ. It’s important that you practice techniques that you discussed with your Observer in between runs – that way you’ll progress to your Advanced Test faster. NB: The IAM Observer qualification does not authorise Observers to give professional tuition, so all guidance is free. However, an Observer’s typical costs (petrol & tyres) can be about £10 per 40 miles, so please remember to offer a contribution to defray your Observer’s running costs. Check Tests AAM has Senior Observers, each of who has many years of experience as Motorcyclists and Observers, and who have taken and passed the IAM’s rigorous Senior Observer test. These are not IAM Examiners, but they can give you just as testing a ride. And they will, for the usual petrol money. This will make sure that no little nasty faults have been missed.
