Better Driving Course

What does driving mean to you? Is it just the convenience of getting from A to B or do you take pride in the way you drive?  How would you rate your driving skills? Could you be an even better driver?

Twice a year (Spring and Autumn) the Aylesbury group of the Institute for Advanced Motorists run a 6-week course, designed to improve your driving standards. The course aims to help drivers become more confident, skillful and most importantly safer.

The course typically runs on a week-day evening from 8pm until 10pm.  For only £30, drivers will be given the opportunity to learn everything from predicting the road ahead to having the right driving attitude to make sure you are safer on the road.

An assessment drive is offered to each participant taking the course. This allows attendees to put the theory into practise and receive guidance on their driving skills. It’s a good way to find out what bad habits may have developed and find out the best way to improve on them.  Attendees are also given a demonstration drive by IAM Senior Observers.

Valerie Letheren, Portfolio Holder for Transportation (Buckinghamshire County Council) says, “Between October 2005 and October 2006, 163 car drivers and passengers were killed and seriously injured on Buckinghamshire’s roads. The County Council is working in partnership with organisations like IAM to reduce this figure, and courses like ‘Better Driving’ offer valuable advice which would help increase everyone’s awareness of driving and more importantly driving safely.”

Michael Bowness, from the Aylesbury group of IAM says, “The course is aimed at all drivers. It’s an opportunity for everyone to come along and improve their driving in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere.”

Young driver, Rebecca Dengler, an IAM member has completed the practical sessions saying, “I have found the course really valuable. I am a more confident driver now and have gained skills which I would not otherwise have developed.”
