June 2010 - Skid Resistance of Road Surface Materials
The grip between vehicle tyres and the road surface is an important topic within road safety. When drivers are emergancy braking on a wet surface, they need a minimum level of skid resistance in order to achieve a normal safe stopping distance. However, providing high levels of skid resistance on all roads at all times is unfortunatly not an option.
This talk will give a brief introduction to common road surfacing materials and examine the properties which contribute to skid resistance; samples of typical materials will be on display.
There are various routine ways of measuring skid resistance; these will be described in the context of maintaining safe standards - which is something all highway authorities strive to do.
David Frankland is a highways engineer with over forty years experience, and has specialised in materials and road surface characteristics. He has worked in research, local government, and consultancy. He has pioneered new forms of specification for road surface treatment processes, and has served on various national technical committees including County Surveyors Society and British Standards Institution.
